Mediation

Purpose

Mediation or Dispute Resolution encourages open discussion and resolution of conflicts without court intervention, while avoiding extra costs and time a court hearing can cause. Mediation will be used for small claims, eviction and rent escrow cases.

What is Mediation?

  • Available in person, by phone, email or by Zoom
  • Utilizes a neutral third party trained in Mediation who can assist the parties in communicating and reaching a resolution
  • Provides resolution of conflicts without court intervention, while avoiding extra costs and the necessity of a court hearing
  • Participants who resolve their own disputes are more likely to stick to the terms of that settlement
  • Mediation is completely confidential

Is Mediation Mandatory?

Small Claims

  • Yes. All small claims cases are required to go through Mediation. Failure to do so will result in delays in your case, dismissal or default judgment against you.

Evictions or Rent Escrow

  • Mediation is encouraged but not mandatory.
  • A request for Mediation can be made from the time of filing until the hearing.
