The Akron Municipal Court and the Glendale Cemetery To Honor Civil War Veteran on Wednesday, November 10

The Akron Municipal Court and the Glendale Cemetery will co-host an in-person tribute on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 beginning at 2:00 p.m. for Civil War Veteran and former Summit County Court of Common Pleas Judge Alvin Coe Voris. The ceremony will take place in the Civil War Memorial Chapel on the Glendale property followed by a walking tour of the cemetery.
 
Alvin Coe Voris enlisted as Sergeant in the 29th Ohio Infantry Regiment in September 1861, was promoted 2nd Lieutenant and appointed Lieutenant Colonel in the 67th Ohio Infantry Regiment on October 11, 1861. Following the war, he resumed the practice of law and served the public as a Judge on the Summit County Court of Common Pleas bench from 1890-1896. He passed away in 1904.
 
Members of the press and public are welcome to attend to the event taking place at 150 Glendale Avenue in Akron.
 
Four speakers are on the agenda for the ceremony:
  • Glendale Cemetery Chief Operating Officer Steven Kaut will give a brief history of the historical cemetery
  • Glendale Cemetery Board of Trustees Member John Frank will explain the importance of the Civil War Memorial Chapel
  • Akron Municipal Court Probation Officer Dennis Parks who will tell the story of Veteran Alvin Coe Voris
  • United States Navy, Lieutenant, JAGC Veteran and Akron Municipal Court Magistrate Jennifer D. Towell who will discuss the history of women in the military
A walking tour of the cemetery will be held for all who wish to participate. The Chapel is not heated, so please dress appropriately based on the day’s weather forecast.

"I would like to thank all United States Veterans for their service," said Akron Municipal Court Judge Jerry Larson who also presides over the Valor Court, a specialized Veteran’s treatment docket. "I am grateful for our staff and the Glendale Cemetery leadership team who are working together to bring attention to Alvin Coe Voris' journey."

Masks will be required when inside the Memorial Chapel. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available.

Greeters will point guests in the proper direction for parking and entry into the Memorial Chapel upon arrival.
